Start your research with a question

Start Your Research with a Question!

Getting started with your research can be time-consuming and frustrating, and there never seem to be enough hours in the day.

  • Have you ever stared at a blank search box and didn't know what to type?

  • Have you been overwhelmed with the number of articles and not sure where to start?

Asking a research question is a great way to start your research.

  • A topic is too broad to cover thoroughly, but a question has an answer.
  • An open-ended question calls for real research and thinking.

  1. Start with a general topic - Your assignment will usually give you a topic to research. We aren't ready to start our research yet. When you only focus on your topic, you can be overwhelmed with information and articles. (Topic: Media Violence)

  2. Browse general books, articles, or websites for ideas - Taking the time to learn about your topic before starting your research will help you understand your topic and save time. This is when Wikipedia can be helpful. You cannot use Wikipedia as a source, but it will give you an overview of your topic. You can also use QUICKsearch Research Starters to learn more about your topic.

  3. Narrow to a specific question - As you read and learn about your topic, write down your questions. Pick a question you want to know the answer to. (Are teens affected by violent media?)

  4. Narrow it further - Now, narrow that question even more. A clearly stated question helps you decide what information is needed in your paper and what is not relevant. (Is there any evidence that violent video games increase violence in teens?)

These four steps will help you create a research question that will guide your research and make your writing more meaningful by answering your question.
